Oct 31 – Nov 1 | Halloween costumes, colorful leaves and a neighborhood hot dog tradition—there’s plenty to enjoy around Deerfield this weekend!
As a Deerfield resident for more than 30 years, I appreciate the traditions and everyday services that bring our community together. Here are some activities and helpful reminders for Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1.
Saturday, October 31: Halloween in Deerfield
Trick-or-Treating: 3:30–7 p.m.
Get those costumes and candy bags ready! Deerfield’s official trick-or-treat hours are 3:30–7 p.m. on Saturday, October 31.
Bring a flashlight or reflective accessories, use sidewalks and marked crossings, and keep younger children with an adult. Drivers, please watch carefully for excited trick-or-treaters.
Free Chicago-Style Hot Dogs: Starting at 4 p.m.
Take a break from collecting candy for a neighborhood Halloween tradition!
Opem Tax Advocates, Inc. and the Law Office of Steven A. Leahy, P.C. are hosting their annual free hot dog giveaway for the 24th consecutive year.
- When: Saturday, October 31, from 4–10 p.m., or until the hot dogs run out
- Where: On Half Day Road, across from Bannockburn Green Shopping Center
- Who’s invited: Trick-or-treaters, parents and neighbors
Enjoy a Chicago-style hot dog and a chance to connect with neighbors during your Halloween rounds. Plain hot dogs will also be available.
Sunday, November 1: Enjoy Some Simple Fall Fun
After Saturday’s excitement, Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for relaxed family time. Weather permitting, try these activities at your own pace:
- Take a fall color walk. See how many different leaf shapes and colors the children can find.
- Make a backyard leaf pile. Enjoy some playtime and take autumn photos before finishing the yard cleanup. Keep play piles on the lawn, away from traffic and curbside collection areas.
- Create leaf art. Try crayon leaf rubbings or make a colorful collage.
- Enjoy a cozy afternoon. Read a favorite book together and share stories about the weekend’s costumes.
These are suggestions for your own family time, so there’s no event registration required.
Deerfield Leaf Pickup Is Underway
Planning some weekend yard cleanup? Beginning the week of October 26 and continuing through November 25, 2026, Public Works crews will make one pass by each house in the Village each week during the program.
Before bringing leaves to the curb, check your scheduled collection day. Some pickup days have changed.
To help crews complete their routes:
- Keep leaf piles no wider than five feet.
- Place leaves at the curb or carriage walk edge the evening before your scheduled pickup.
- Keep leaves out of streets, sidewalks and carriage walks.
- Keep sticks, rocks, branches, grass clippings and mud out of piles.
- Avoid street parking on your collection day.
- Allow for possible weather delays.
Find the collection map and complete instructions on the Village of Deerfield’s Leaf Collection Program page.
This is one of the practical Village services that helps residents care for their properties throughout the fall. Thank you to our Public Works crews!
Don’t Forget to Set Your Clocks to “Fall Back” Tonight!
Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1, at 2 a.m.
Set clocks that do not adjust automatically back one hour before bed Saturday night. At 2 a.m., the time returns to 1 a.m., giving us an extra hour as November begins. Remember that evening darkness will arrive earlier by the clock.
Have a wonderful Halloween weekend, Deerfield! Whether you’re greeting trick-or-treaters, enjoying a hot dog or playing in the leaves, I hope you find time to enjoy our community.
